Various Charts depicting the New Zealand population and its relationship to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. (Covid-19)

Further Announcement
Monday 8 June 2020

From midnight on Monday 8 June, New Zealand will change to coronavirus alert level 1. Without restrictions*, everyone can return to work, school, sports and domestic travel, and all restrictions on gathering numbers are removed. Controls at the borders remain for those entering New Zealand, including temperature & health screening and testing of all arrivals, and mandatory 14 day managed quarantine or isolation.

* Oddly, no obvious mention that dental practices are excluded and remain at alert level 2.

The charts and statistics on this page will be semi-regularly updated.

They appear in date order, but the various charts are not ordered within the same date. I.e. Each date may not contain an updated replica of all the charts displayed for the day[s] before, and / or may not be in the same order. The types of charts may change at times, sometimes showing new details and some showing differing ways of displaying the same or similar statistical information.

The graphs, charts and associated statistics are gleaned from the NZ Government web site, NZ Ministry of Health information, WHO and some media adaptations of that same data. Accuracy of all the data on this page is open to question. There is some modest commentary at the end.

Remember that the first casualty in war is the truth. Even if that's a medical 'war' against a virus. Treat the information on this page as you would any other Internet information - use your prudent judgement!

Particularly given the who of those involved . . .

Special acknowledgement: the "Infection & Cure Statistics" chart is from Stuff media.

One of the major difficulties with testing for covid-19 and the statistics about the spread of the disease, is the people who have the virus, but display no symptoms. Such people are referred to as silent carriers or asymptomatic. They are outwardly healthy and having no symptoms, do not report for testing, but remain able to spread the virus to others.

Another difficulty is the lack of broader data that would give some greater meaning to the available statistics. If the numbers infected in each age group were set against that number of the population in that age group, a sense of percentage perspective would emerge.

29 March 2020   -  Infection by age group.

A problem with the graph above is that it is not adjusted for population proportions by age group, so it's not possible to assess the percentage of any age group infection rates.

Note:
Roughly 500,000 New Zealanders are over 70 (approx. 10% of the total NZ population) and they face the greatest risk of death if they contract Covid-19. An elderly person's risk of catching the disease appears to be no different to a younger person's risk, but the older a person is are, the higher the chance of severe, adverse, health consequences.   Source   That chance also varies depending on any pre-existing and regularly, preventatively medicated condition. E.g. Blood pressure problems, asthma, emphysema, etc.

Today's (second in NZ) death was a 90-year-old female with dementia and other serious, pre-existing health problems. A sad consequence of the lock-down for her family was that - whether or not she would recognise them - they could not be with her, in her final hours. (The first NZ death was a 70-year-old, also with severe, pre-existing health problems.)

A Disaster Happened
Two new cases - imports from the U.K. Two who ruined NZ's covid-free reputation and exposed the farce of bureaucratic bungling and incompetence at the country's borders.

The Tooth Fairy fumes and foams at the mouth after her reassurances were proven false.
(Not a lot unlike the 'solidarity-with-the-workers' pay-cut-that-wasn't for NZ MPs.)

The media didn't seem to notice (or comment on) the aspect that the Tooth Fairy and her socio-commie government could - in less than 24 hours - pass laws restricting NZ citizens' freedoms. But a law reducing politicians' gold-plated-sinecure wages by 20% was simply too hard to manage. Funny, that.

At midnight on 25 March, 2020, New Zealand [NZ] became subject to a state-of-emergency, curfew-like, level-4-alert, nationwide, "lock-down," to last for 28 days. (If not extended). Only essential service businesses are open. Essential workers may travel. Others may travel within their own locality for food, medicine and other essentials-of-life requirements. E.g. Daily exercise or a necessary physical visit to the doctor. Some medical consultations are being done via video or phone call.

Pharmacies and food outlets limit the number of customers who may be in the shop, at one time. (I.e. One out - one in, once the maximum number of customers are in the shop.) The government has asked that only one family member "do the shopping." Food and drink sellers have placed limits on quantities of each item that can be purchased in one visit. Liquor stores are closed, as are fitness gyms, cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels and motels, concerts, public gatherings, etc. Some significant events have been cancelled such as shows, market days, conferences, etc.

Alcohol-based hand sanitisers and face masks (despite furious debate about their effectiveness) are virtually unprocurable throughout NZ. Toilet paper? Well . . . Stress and near-hysteria makes people do (poo?) strange things. A fair few conspiracy theories are getting more publicity than usual, too. The wider general NZ population seems accepting of the need for the lock-down. That mood may change as 'cabin fever' sets in, in the days ahead.

Outside exercise is permitted for everyone, within their own residential home locality. A "social distance" of 2 metres (seven feet) is to be maintained between people, when interacting with others outside their own household (bubble) members. In the first week, police reported an increase in the number of domestic violence incidents.

A national State of Emergency was declared on 25 March 2020, but not for the full 28 day lock-down period, initially. During a state of emergency, the government and the police have wide-ranging, extraordinary powers and many (if not most)civil liberties, legal procedural protections and human rights are suspended.

The government is spending billions of dollars in business and wage subsidies (80% of normal), to support businesses and to assist staff who have been made redundant because their workplace was not an "essential service," so was ordered (by the gov't) to close.

New Zealand has virtually closed its borders. NZ citizens returning to the country may be quarantined, or subject to 14 days of a 'self-regulated-isolation period,' depending on their circumstances. (About mid-way through the lock-down, quarantine became mandatory.) Commercial trade channels, local "supply chains," freight, courier and postal services are proceeding as close to normally as possible.

Foreign visitors and tourists who were in NZ at midnight on Wed 25 March were in an awkward position as they had no NZ home in which to self-isolate for 14 days, let alone remain for the 28 days of the "lock-down," covering the whole country. Suggestions of special repatriation charter flights back to their home country were made, but the NZ government was initially averse to that idea. Likely because it involved people travelling significant distances to one of the two airports being used for repatriation flights: Auckland & Christchurch.

Around 3 April, that changed for the better for foreigner visitors to NZ, with a relaxation of the restrictions for necessary domestic travel to connect to repatriation flights to Germany. AirNZ reported that it was quite a logistical exercise. Passengers had to remain on board the aircraft in transit at Vancouver airport in Canada, (or Singapore), while the aircraft was re-provisioned and a fresh set of pilots and cabin crew boarded for the last flight sector to Frankfurt.

The aspect of greatest concern is that the colossal economic fall-out will not be shared equitably. Those in the (so-called) lower half of the socio-economic bracket will suffer significantly and the most. Mortgage holders in NZ have agreed to a mortgage re-payment reprieve or 'holiday.' It looks good on the surface but it's a profit-from-the-emergency rip-off. Interest accrues so while other businesses are worse off, the banks are slightly better off - they just have to wait longer for the money.

Small & medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and lower waged / salaried earners are bearing the brunt. For employees, the missing 20% of their wage or salary is irrecoverable and its absence will really hurt. For SMEs, most will suffer a loss of 80% of their income, or more. Possibly 100%. Many may not survive.

At the beginning of the lock-down, Parliament was suspended for a month. At that time, there was no offer from NZ parliamentary representatives to accept a 20% pay cut while on holiday, to achieve empathetic parity with the 80%-of-their-usual-wage / salary that displaced workers get during the shut down of their workplace. Something mandated by those very same holidaying-on-taxpayer-funded-full-pay representatives. [Important: see next paragraph.] Their conscience did get to them, eventually!

At the end of the third week of the lock-down, the government announced that all members of parliament and senior civil servants will be having their pay cut by 20% for six months. Why did the government not lead by example in week one, rather than being shamed by the example of others? Typical socio-commie attitudes, perhaps? I.e. Do as we say - not as we do.

Although there was some softening of attitudes towards the end of the first week, in the first few days there was open hostility by Local Government NZ towards any discount - even deferment - relief from the Rates (property taxes) levied by local councils / counties. Or the cancellation of Rates increases for the following year. Or a pay cut for councillors who - eating and drinking at their constituents' expense - sit around and read reports most days. Temporary utilities charges reductions, from telecon companies to electricity suppliers? Hell, no!

Another aspect that seems to have escaped significant mention is the billions of dollars being borrowed by the NZ government, to keep the country functioning. Eventually, a bank economist mentioned that - for more than a few generations to come - the NZ taxpayer would be saddled with the burden of paying the interest and principal of those borrowed billions.

The government has indicated that the tax department's (IRD - Inland Revenue) normal filing dates, penalties and interest for certain tax type dues will be relaxed for some time to come. No relief on the amount; just 'flexibility' as to when it is to be paid and suspension of possible penalties and interest.

Despite those soothing and nice-sounding suggestions, the brain-dead NZ media has been filled with suggestions of all sorts of new and 'innovative' taxes for the people's proletariat to enjoy, as part of the socio-commies' future pay-back plan. Socialists - like leopards - never change their spots and always know better than the last lot of [failed] socialists. Plus they know better how to spend the money that you work for (for your advancement - of course), than you do.

cartoon

Another lamentable aspect of the terminally-diseased NZ media is what's missing (or misses mention) from the daily 'news.' At the end of the first week, police reported (and so did the media) an increase in the incidence of domestic violence. Since then, the media has become mute on the matter. One or two suicides have been obliquely mentioned as a 'hidden cost' to the economic havoc wrought by the lock-down. There may well be more, but there's every likelihood that the (now State-supported [taxpayer-funded]) media have been suggestively prompted to 'overlook' such things. Can't have the general populace asking awkward question, now, can we?

As the old Chinese saying has it: interesting times.

Be sceptical of the foreign statistics that abound. Especially those coming from Chairman Mao's mates. One thing that the communist Chinese and Premier Zhing Bhing Kaching are unparalleled at is smiling, bare-faced lying. (All in the name of the splendid and wondrous 'good' of collective communism, of course.)

Historical Announcement - 4.00 pm., Monday 20 April 2020

New Zealand will remain in level 4 lock-down until 11.59pm (midnight!) on Monday April 27 (Anzac Day observance, five more days that the original 28 days planned) to make sure that the nation is stamping out Covid-19. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that Cabinet had decided that the country will then move to level 3.

Further Historical Announcement - Monday 11 May 2020

From midnight on Wednesday 13 May, New Zealand will change to coronavirus alert level 2 in three separate stages, but some restrictions such as gatherings size will continue. Initially, most businesses will be allowed to open, including restaurants, malls, cinemas, shops, health services, and hairdressers. People will be able to socialise with others and travel around the country, as well as playing team sports.

On Monday 18 May - schools and early childhood centres will open.

On Thursday 21 May, bars will be allowed to reopen.
