Just what is the Tytler Cycle? It's not hard to grasp and you may be the better off for knowing about it.
A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public purse, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.
The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence.
Ponder the titles and subsets which Tytler detailed:
1. Bondage to spiritual faith
- The search for unity and deep moral groundings;
2. Spiritual faith to great courage
- The fight for freedom;
3. Courage to liberty
- Freedom and prosperity achieved;
4. Liberty to abundance
- Focus turns to material things;
5. Abundance to selfishness
- It's all about me and my things;
6. Selfishness to complacency
- Entitlement and self-centredness;
7. Complacency to apathy
- Personal responsibility is lost - nothing is my fault;
8. Apathy to dependence
- Independence is controlled and freedom centralised;
9. Dependence back into bondage
- The state gains total control (point of no return).
