On the left is a picture of what's left of the Treaty of Waitangi. It's written the Maori language. It's held at Archives New Zealand. Some two thirds of the lower part contains the signatures or 'marks' of the Maori chiefs who agreed with preamble and the three simple clauses of the Treaty.
On this page, Archives New Zealand wilfully mis-represents a deceptive (so-called) English version. There is no such thing as an English version of the Treaty of Waitangi.
One that page is the sentence, "On the day that it was first signed, there were versions in English and Maori." That is an out-and-out lie. There was only one document being signed on that day, at Waitangi. It was written in the Maori language of that era.
There can be an English (language) translation of the Treaty-in-the-Maori-language and an English language draft for the Treaty. A draft from which the Treaty was translated into and written in the Maori language.
What is shown there, under the heading, "English text" is not the text of the final English language draft from which the Treaty was translated into the Maori language document signed at Waitangi.
There is no English language version. None. Not at all.
The Littlewood draft is the final English language draft used to create the Treaty of Waitangi in the Maori language. (You'll see a copy of it on the next page.)
It is also held at Archives New Zealand, Wellington. But it is not displayed on their web site. Nor can it be located by searching their web site.
• Why is such an important and historically critical document hidden away?
• Why does the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 not use the Maori language version of the Treaty of Waitangi? The one that was signed at Waitangi, in 1840. Especially given the Tribunal's emphasis on advancing and preserving the Maori language! Financial opportunism is why.
• Why does the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 use a false and wrong English language translation of the Treaty of Waitangi?
• Why does the racially-biased Waitangi Tribunal not use the native Maori language version of the Treaty of Waitangi? The real one, signed at Waitangi in 1840.
There's something very fishy going on.
